Canceling a hosting service

Hosting services on CloudPress — WordPress sites, Mailspace and cPanel accounts — can't be canceled for the end of their term. To stop one, you delete it. That takes effect immediately, and you get the unused part of the term back as account credit.

Why there's no cancel at the end of the term

Earlier, you could cancel a service so it ran until its renewal date and was removed then. That often went wrong: the removal happened weeks or months later, at a moment people no longer expected it, and a site or mailbox disappeared that someone still needed.

Now you choose the moment yourself. Because the unused time is credited back, deleting early costs you nothing, so there's no reason to wait for the end of the term.

What happens when you delete a service

  1. Billing stops right away. Renewals are canceled at the moment you delete.

  2. The service is suspended for 7 days. It doesn't disappear at once. A site is powered off, a Mailspace stops receiving and delivering mail, and a cPanel account is suspended on the server. Your files, databases and mailboxes are kept in the meantime. The row shows the exact date the service will be removed.

  3. You can bring it back during those 7 days. Click Restore on the service's row and you go through checkout for the same package. The credit you received for deleting is applied automatically, so this usually costs little or nothing.

  4. After 7 days it's removed for good. Everything on the service is destroyed, and it can no longer be restored. You can also remove it permanently yourself before the 7 days are up.

The 7 days is the default

Your workspace can have a different retention window. Go by the removal date on the service's row, not by counting days yourself.

Getting the unused part back as credit

When you delete a service partway through a term you've already paid for, CloudPress calculates the unused time and puts that amount on your account as credit. This also applies after a renewal: if the service has just renewed and you delete it afterwards, you aren't stuck with the new term. The unused part comes back.

  • The credit is a balance on your account, not a refund to your card. It's deducted automatically from your next invoices. You'll find it under Billing → Overview as Available credit, and as an entry on the Credit Notes tab.
  • See Billing for how the credit is calculated and used.

Moved from the old platform? You get credit only after the first renewal

The credit only applies once the service has been renewed at least once on the current platform. A service that came over from the old platform and hasn't renewed here yet was paid for elsewhere, so there's nothing to credit: deleting it stops it without returning the remaining time.

Domains are never credited, whichever platform they're on.

Delete a service

Deleting is done from the service itself, not from Billing. The Subscriptions tab under Billing only lets you change which card pays for a subscription. Follow the guide for your service:

Each of those pages covers who is allowed to delete, what you see while the service is pending deletion, and how to restore it or remove it permanently.
